Baker Donelson Scholarships

Baker Donelson is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where the individual differences among us are understood, respected, appreciated and recognized as sources of strength of the Firm. These qualities enrich the environment in which we work. With this in mind, Baker Donelson will again award three scholarships to diverse law students this year. Each recipient will be awarded $10,000 which will be paid during the student's third year of law school to help defray the cost of law school tuition and related expenses. Additionally, recipients will be awarded a six-week, salaried 2L Summer Associate position in one of our following offices: Birmingham, AL; Atlanta, GA; Baton Rouge and New Orleans, LA; Jackson, MS; or Chattanooga, Johnson City, Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville, TN.

Scholarship Contest from the Access Group

For the second consecutive year, Access Group is sponsoring its popular law scholarship video contest and is inviting as many students as possible to participate in this opportunity. During last year’s “One Less Worry” contest, Access Group received 99 video submissions and awarded six winning law students more than $15,000 in scholarships.

This year’s law video contest, “My Inspiration,” is calling for current and entering law students to create and submit a brief video describing their inspirations for becoming a lawyer. The top ten videos, as chosen by Access Group, will be posted on YouTube.com and the student whose video receives the most votes will win a $10,000 scholarship. Access Group may also award up to five additional honorable mention scholarships valued at $1,500 each.

Deadline for entries is July 15, 2009, with judging set to begin August 3, 2009. The winners will be announced by September 3, 2009.

ABA Section of Antitrust Law $5,000 Fellowship Award

The American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law is pleased to announce the return of its Fellowship Award for the summer of 2009. The purpose of the Fellowship Award is to defray the housing and living expenses of distinguished law students pursuing unpaid summer employment opportunities within approved government agencies (federal, state, or international) dedicated to the enforcement of antitrust laws, or other institutions whose primary mission is to advance the study of antitrust and competition law.

Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division Scholarship

You could be the UM law student who wins a $1,500.00 cash scholarship from the Florida Bar's Young Lawyers Division!

This year, the Young Lawyers Division of the Florida Bar ("YLD") will award one (1) $1,500.00 cash scholarship to one (1) law student at each of Florida's ABA- accredited law schools for a total of eleven (11) scholarships. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of both merit and financial need. Other than a photocopy of the applicant's current law school transcript and a signed letter of recommendation, no other attachments should accompany the completed Scholarship Application. A copy of the application can be downloaded on the YLD website.

Completed scholarship applications, along with a letter of recommendation and the applicant's law school transcript, must be returned by U.S. Mail by 4/30/09 to:

2009 Sir John M. Templeton Fellowships Essay Contest

The Sir John M. Templeton Fellowships Essay Contest encourages students around the world to study the meaning and significance of economic and personal liberty.

The Templeton Essay Contest awards cash fellowships to the authors of the top three essays, with entries reviewed by a panel of three distinguished scholars. Here is this year’s topic:

STUDENT JUDICIAL CLERKSHIP PANEL (1L and 2L students)
Interested in applying for a post-graduate judicial clerkship? The judicial clerkship application process begins as early as the spring semester of your second year. To help you get started, current students who have successfully navigated the judicial clerkship application process will speak about their experiences and provide tips on how to secure a clerkship. If you have any interest in a judicial clerkship, you will not want to miss this insightful presentation. Monday, February 9, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. in Room 108.

FLORIDA SUPREME COURT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (1L and 2L students)
Applications for the Summer 2009 Florida Supreme Court Internship Program for Distinguished Law Students are now available in the CDO. First and second year students are eligible to apply. The application deadline is Monday, February 23rd.

An information session will be held on Monday, February 16th at 12:30 p.m. in room 108. Former interns will be on hand to answer questions about their experiences at the Supreme Court. The application and selection processes will also be discussed.

For students interested in working in public interest this summer, the Student to Student Public Interest Career Fair is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the opportunities that are out there. Students who worked in public interest last summer will be available to talk to you about their experiences and to give you ideas on what organizations you can apply to. Casual dress is encouraged as this is an informal career fair. Thursday, February 12 at 12:30 p.m. on the Bricks (Rain Location: Student Lounge).

Internship and Scholarship Opportunity for Diverse Law Students Wishing to Practice Law in Sarasota County

The Sarasota County Bar Association Diversity Scholarship Fund is intended to provide an opportunity for first through third year law students of under-represented minority backgrounds (e.g. race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, or socioeconomic background), who have an interest in practicing law in Sarasota County upon graduation, to obtain summer placement.

At the conclusion of the student’s summer employment in a law firm or governmental agency, the law school the student attends will receive scholarship funds of at least $5,000.00 per student to be used by the student to continue his or her education. During employment, the student will be assigned an attorney mentor from the Sarasota County Bar Association and will attend a reception to welcome and honor the student and the employer with representatives from the Bar Association and Community Foundation..

Applicants must be attending any accredited law school in the state of Florida and be able to devote at least 30 hours per week to employment in Sarasota County during the summer.

The application deadline is December 1, 2008.

Latham Diversity Scholars Program for Rising 2L Students

Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that the application process is now open for the Latham Diversity Scholars Program. For the fourth consecutive year, the firm will be awarding a $10,000 non-renewable scholarship to each of four second-year law students for use during their third year at ABA-accredited law schools (2009-10). Students are asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and official or unofficial law school transcript by September 15, 2008. The application form and instructions can be found on the firm’s Web site at www.lw.com/diversity under the Diversity Scholars Program heading.

To become a Latham Diversity Scholar, you must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school and intend to practice law in a major city of the United States. You must have successfully completed your first year of a full-time JD program, with an expected graduation date of spring 2010, and you may not be the recipient of a similar scholarship award from another law firm.

Factors considered in choosing the Latham Diversity Scholars include a candidate’s:

· Ability and commitment to contribute to the diversity objectives of global law firms,
· Life experiences that have shaped values and that provide a unique perspective, including any obstacles or challenges faced in choosing or pursuing law as a profession,
· Academic and leadership achievements, and
· Desire to practice in a global law firm environment.

This scholarship is not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of employment at Latham & Watkins. Rather, it is open to all law students and is designed to encourage greater diversity among the attorneys at large law firms as a way of benefiting the entire profession. Recipients will be announced in the early spring of 2009.

The Latham Diversity Scholars Program enhances Latham’s efforts to recruit and hire diverse summer clerks and attorneys. The firm’s ongoing initiatives include its annual Diversity Weekend attended by diverse law students receiving offers from the firm and a range of additional outreach efforts by Latham’s Diversity Hiring Sub-Committee.

Interview Process
Interviews at the Job Fair are arranged in two methods. Ten of the 14 interviews will be pre-selected by the employer.
