Baker Donelson Scholarships

Each recipient will be awarded $10,000 which will be paid during the student's third year of law school to help defray the cost of law school tuition and related expenses. Scholarship Contest from the Access Group

For the second consecutive year, Access Group is sponsoring its popular law scholarship video contest and is inviting as many students as possible to participate in this opportunity. During last year’s “One Less Worry” contest, Access Group received 99 video submissions and awarded six winning law students more than $15,000 in scholarships.

This year’s law video contest, “My Inspiration,” is calling for current and entering law students to create and submit a brief video describing their inspirations for becoming a lawyer. The top ten videos, as chosen by Access Group, will be posted on YouTube.com and the student whose video receives the most votes will win a $10,000 scholarship. Access Group may also award up to five additional honorable mention scholarships valued at $1,500 each.

Deadline for entries is July 15, 2009, with judging set to begin August 3, 2009. The winners will be announced by September 3, 2009.

ABA Section of Antitrust Law $5,000 Fellowship Award

The American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law is pleased to announce the return of its Fellowship Award for the summer of 2009. The purpose of the Fellowship Award is to defray the housing and living expenses of distinguished law students pursuing unpaid summer employment opportunities within approved government agencies (federal, state, or international) dedicated to the enforcement of antitrust laws, or other institutions whose primary mission is to advance the study of antitrust and competition law.

On Monday, all students were sent via email (to the email address listed on Symplicity) a copy of the 2009 Job Fair Information chart and the Job Fair Pre-Registration Form. All students potentially interested in participating in a job fair this summer or fall should review the job fair chart and note any registration deadlines.

Four job fairs require pre-registration: The Southeastern Minority Job Fair and Southeastern Law Placement Consortium Job Fairs (both in Atlanta, GA), the Washington, D.C. Interview Program (Washington, D.C.) and West Coast Interview Program (Santa Monica, CA). Pre-registration does not bind you to attend any of the job fairs but rather guarantees that you will receive information on how to participate. You must pre-register by submitting the Pre-Registration Form no later than Friday, April 24 at 5:00 p.m. Forms may be returned to the CDO in Room A-112 or emailed to Nirva Pierre-Louis.

This is an excellent opportunity if you are interested in pursuing a position with an intellectual property employer. One Year Disability Rights Fellowship

In Search of Housing for the Summer?

Every year, law students around the country spend their summer in a different city. Finding housing for the summer is one of the biggest challenges to spending a summer away. Below are some resources that may help you if you are looking for housing this summer:

1. The NALP Apartment Exchange allows students to search for housing or post their own listing - all for free. The NALP Apartment Exchange will be available from January 15 through May 15. Free registration is required to use the site.

2. Spending the summer in NYC? The Educational Housing Services is a not-for-profit organization that provides safe and affordable fully furnished housing to students, grad students and interns coming to New York City. EHS manages multiple properties throughout New York City and Brooklyn, and is a great short term housing option that offers the opportunity to live in a community of your peers. Pass the good news on, and earn $100 for each friend you refer to EHS (that books a reservation). Details here.

The Florida Bar International Law Section is pleased to announce its 2009 Student Paper Competition. Three lucky students will win cash prizes and the opportunity to be published in the Section publication the International Law Quarterly.

Deadline to submit papers is May 29, 2009.

A condensed version of the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd place winning papers will be published in the International Law Quarterly. Additionally, other papers may also be selected for publication!

Federal judges and former law clerks will discuss clerkships, how and when to apply, what judges look for in candidates and how to best prepare for a clerkship. During this event, experienced practitioners will provide plaintiff, labor union, government, and employer perspectives on the practice of employment law. This event will take place at 12:30pm to 2:00pm at the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes Resort in Orlando, FL.

This program is being presented as part of the Section of Labor and Employment Law’s National Conference on Equal Employment Opportunity Law which will be attended by more than 250 attorneys from around the country. Capital University Law School, in conjunction with the National Center for Adoption Law and Policy, is pleased to offer a one-week intensive Interdisciplinary Child Welfare Institute (ICWI). This two-credit course will provide law students and graduate level social work students with a mutual understanding of the legal and sociological principles central to child welfare practice. In the increasingly complex world of child welfare, quality collaboration among legal and social work professionals is critical to keeping children safe and strengthening families.

Interdisciplinary learning provides a common foundation for students from different professional programs and an environment for developing the skills required of future child welfare attorneys and social workers.

Capital University also offers the Summer Adoption Law Institute, another two-credit, one-week intensive course offered August 3 -7, 2009 that will explore adoption and related child protection issues from both academic and practitioner perspectives.

The National Association of Law Students With Disabilities would like to share the following message with University of Miami School of Law Students:

The National Association of Law Students With Disabilities (NALSWD) is a coalition of law students dedicated to disability advocacy and the achievement of equal access, inclusion, diversity, and non-discrimination in legal education and the legal profession. Our goal is to assist individuals in achieving their best employment potential by ensuring that students receive the accommodations and cultivate the skills they need to be successful members of the legal bar.

NALSWD was founded in 2007 with support from the ABA Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities and is currently in the process of becoming an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. We have also received broad-based financial support from the largest law firms in the country. Our 2008 conference featured many prominent lawyers with disabilities. Our keynote speaker was the Honorable Richard S. Brown, Chief Judge of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and the only deaf judge in the country. Andy Imparato, CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities; Acting Vice Chair Christine M. Griffin of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Olegario Cantos VII of the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division; and Claudia Gordon of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are among the many lawyers with disabilities who spoke at our conference and have continued to support NALSWD’s development. The conference demonstrated that lawyers with disabilities are capable of ascending to the highest ranks of the private and public sectors.

We are seeking all law students with disabilities, whether they have physical, psychiatric, intellectual, learning, or emotional disabilities. While law students with disabilities from over twenty law schools currently comprise NALSWD, our goal is to reach law students with disabilities at every law school in the country. We are especially interested in expanding our membership among two categories of students that are presently underrepresented in NALSWD: 1Ls with disabilities, to help facilitate their success in a wholly new learning environment, and students with hidden disabilities (e.g. learning or mental health disabilities) so they can connect with other students in law school going through the same experience.

NALSWD was formed to facilitate a sustained community for law students with disabilities to seek support and professional advice as they navigate law school and the legal profession. In this vein, the former President of NALSWD is now forming an affiliated Lawyers With Disabilities group, thanks to a generous Hearne Leadership Grant from the American Association of People With Disabilities (AAPD). This will ensure that disability leadership is continuous and that the foundation being laid for law students with disabilities won’t erode as students graduate and pursue their careers.

The American Bar Association Section of Taxation is pleased to announce that the application period for its Public Service Fellowship program for 2010-2012 is now open. Applications must be received by August 1,2009 to be considered. Applicants selected for interviews will be invited to attend the Section's meeting in Chicago on September 25-26, 2009, and asked to participate in interviews on September 26, 2009.

The Public Service Fellowship program, which began in 2008, reflects the Section's desire to advance public service efforts in tax law, and to foster a more fair and equitable tax system. Pro Bono service has been an integral part of the Section's activities for many years. The Section actively encourages member participation in various Pro Bono efforts, holds numerous training sessions to that end, and devotes many of its resources to providing legal services to those in need. The Section recognizes the need for funding and fostering recent law school graduates or judicial clerks who wish to dedicate some portion of their professional careers to public service in tax.

You could be the UM law student who wins a $1,500.00 cash scholarship from the Florida Bar's Young Lawyers Division!

This year, the Young Lawyers Division of the Florida Bar ("YLD") will award one (1) $1,500.00 cash scholarship to one (1) law student at each of Florida's ABA- accredited law schools for a total of eleven (11) scholarships. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of both merit and financial need. Other than a photocopy of the applicant's current law school transcript and a signed letter of recommendation, no other attachments should accompany the completed Scholarship Application. Most recently, Mr. Martinez was in Washington, D.C. with the Office of Foreign Missions as Chief of a Regulatory Compliance Unit. Mr. Martinez is now serving as a Diplomat in Residence at Miami-Dade College and Florida International University until July 2009.

HOPE’s success and growth over the past 10 years is due largely in part to the energy, dedication, and leadership of former and current HOPE Fellows.

HOPE Fellows work with domestic and international public interest agencies & non-governmental organizations to provide much-needed legal advocacy to underserved and marginalized populations. All 1Ls and 2Ls are encouraged to apply.

Everglades Fellowship in Washington, D.C. Available

U.M.’s Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy is recruiting a 2009 U.M. graduate for a fellowship in Washington, D.C., for one year, beginning in August 2009. Funded by the Everglades Foundation, the recipient will be placed in a staff position on a congressional committee or federal agency with jurisdiction over issues affecting the Everglades. The fellowship carries a stipend of $45,000 for the year.

Applicants must be scheduled for award of a graduate degree from U.M. in May 2009. A solid academic record is required. The recipient must attend a two-day orientation at the Abess Center in April 2009 and will be required to submit monthly reports on his/her fellowship activities during the year.

Patent Interview Program

Loyola University Chicago School of Law is hosting the 2009 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois. This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, and rising 2L and 3L students interested in pursuing patent law.

Last year roughly 150 employers, 150 law schools, and 1,500 law students from across the country participated in the program. The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the resumes of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program. Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

Who Is Eligible to Participate?

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program. You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students. If you are uncertain as to whether you should participate, please contact Karen Warren. Please note that ONLY law students returning to school in Fall of 2009 may participate. Students graduating this year are NOT eligible. This program is for summer associate and entry-level attorney positions for 2010.

How To Register?

Online student registration for this year’s Patent Law Interview Program is NOW OPEN and will close on Thursday, March 12. To register, please visit the program website. At this stage of registration, you will only need to enter some basic information (you will upload your resume and bid on employers later in the semester). Please note that UM law is listed alphabetically as the University of Miami School of Law in the registration form's drop down menu of law schools.

The CDO will be paying the $35 registration fee for our students, so you will not be charged anything when you register online.

SOLO AND SMALL FIRM INTERVIEW PROGRAM

The General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section (GPSSF) of the Florida Bar cordially invites all law students to participate in the 2009 Solo and Small Firm Interview Program, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 21, 2009 in Orlando, Florida. Registration is free and the deadline is Monday, February 23, 2009. On or shortly after March 1, a list of participating employers will be distributed by e-mail to all registered students and students can then bid for the employers with whom they wish to interview.

To register, you must complete a one-page registration form which is available on the GPSSF website, from your CDO advisor, or the CDO Student Portal. Also available from your advisor and on the portal is a list of economical hotels near the Interview Program site.

The Interview Program is one component of the Solo and Small Firm Annual Conference and students also are encouraged to participate in the Conference, which begins on Friday, March 20 and ends with the Interview Program on the 21st. The Conference will include many programs focused on small firm practice, such as “Managing Your Overhead: How to Operate a Solo or Small Firm and Take Home a Paycheck” and “Managing a Solo or Small Firm and Still Finding Time to Practice Law.” The full-time law student reduced rate is $50. Students interested in attending the conference can obtain a copy of the conference brochure and registration form on the GPSSF website.

The IACHR is seeking candidates for a one year fellowship in Washington, DC to run from May 1, 2009 – April 30, 2010. The objectives of this fellowship is to provide an opportunity for young lawyers from OAS Member States to understand and apply the mechanisms of protection of the Inter-American System of Human Rights in the sphere of women’s rights. The ideal candidate would support the work of the Rapporteurship on the Rights of Women of the Inter-American Commission, under the supervision of its specialists during the period of the fellowship and, at the end of the fellowship, present to the Executive Secretariat of the IACHR a detailed report on activities carried out by the fellow.

The ideal candidate will:

Be a citizen of an OAS Member State;

Be bilingual in Spanish and English (attach certificates testifying thereto), knowledge of French or Portuguese desirable;

Have graduated in law from an officially recognized university (attach copy of the degree and grades obtained);

Have a demonstrable professional interest in the legal field of human rights, especially in the area of women’s rights;

Have received a university degree in law after January 1, 2002;

Present a paper of up to 5 pages, not edited by another person, on one or more women’s rights issues of interest to the candidate;

OAS Scholarship Selection Criteria: In accordance with article 4.2. of the Manual of Procedures of the Scholarship and Training Programs of the OAS, OAS scholarships shall be granted based on the following criteria:

The objectives and priorities established in the Strategic Plan for Partnership for Development;

The training priorities of the member states;

The merits and overall credentials of the candidate, including his/her academic and professional background;

The financial need of the candidate; and

An extensive and equitable geographic distribution for the benefit of all member states and that takes into account the greater needs of the smaller and relatively less developed economies.

Benefits:

The OAS provides a total stipend of US$33,600.00 for the period covered by the fellowship, that is, US$2,800.00 per month for 12 months, and round-trip economy class air transportation from the participant’s country of residence to Washington, D.C., USA With said stipend, the fellow is responsible for securing health insurance coverage of his/her choice, for the entire period of the fellowship, providing proof of such coverage to the Executive Secretariat of the IACHR.

The Commission will award a participation certificate for the Fellowship program only after the successful completion of the fellowship’s total duration period.

Responsibilities of the Selected Candidates:

Once an applicant has been selected, he/she should confirm with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights his/her availability to complete the fellowship during the specified time period, and confirm his/her participation with the Department of Human Development so that the OAS may proceed with the necessary arrangements for purchase of round-trip economy class air transportation between the candidate’s home country and Washington, D.C.

In the event a candidate accepts a Fellowship but cannot complete it, for whatever reason, he/she must immediately inform the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the OAS Department of Human Development so they may decide which course of action to take.

The selected candidates must confirm their acceptance of the scholarship by signing and returning to DHD their completed “form of acceptance of the scholarship award”; only after this has been done will the OAS proceed with the necessary travel arrangements to purchase the air travel tickets, economy class, round-trip, between the scholarship recipient’s country of origin and the study location.

Selected scholarship recipients are responsible for obtaining the necessary visa(s) to enter the country of the fellowship and the corresponding transit(s). The OAS will not be responsible for any costs related to obtaining visas or transfer documentation. The OAS will provide the candidate a document certifying his/her selection as an official Fellow of the IACHR-OAS so that he/she may request the corresponding visa, which is the sole responsibility of the selected candidate.

Each scholarship recipient is responsible for arriving in time for the commencement of activities on the date established.

If the scholarship recipient fails to travel on the scheduled dates, or change routes, after the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/OAS) has purchased his/her travel ticket, he/she will be responsible for paying the difference in ticket costs in order to arrive at the fellowship site in time. The scholarship recipient will furthermore have to reimburse the GS/OAS the total cost of the airfare for his/her travel from his/her country of residence to the site where the Professional Development fellowship will take place and back if, after the ticket has been purchased, he/she declines the fellowship without written authorization from the Department of Human Development.

The latter includes any additional costs, if any, incurred by the GS/OAS, such as extra costs for accommodation during the scholarship recipient’s travel to and from the country where the course will be held.

If the fellow declines, cancel or terminates the Scholarship after the course or program has started without giving enough proof to the OAS/GS, he or she must reimburse OAS/GS the total amount of incurred costs/expenses.

Post-Graduate Law Fellowship in the Florida Keys

Citizens Not Serfs is a grassroots community initiative geared at educating the residents of the Florida Keys about important issues, and providing them with resources to demand accountability from their public officials. The organization is currently seeking two recent law school graduates for two year staggered fellowships. The full-time position is available now and needs to be filled no later than July 2009.

The award includes a generous stipend of $50,000.00 and accommodations at the Summerland Key, Florida three-bedroom waterfront home.

Responsibilities:

The fellowship was established to provide the opportunity for a law student to be able to experience first-hand the confluence of federal, state and local public policy. The Fellow will collaborate with Citizens Not Serfs members, local and state public officials, FEMA representatives and local organizations. The responsibilities include research, consultation and community organizing.

Qualifications:

Applicants should be motivated, flexible and have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to public interest law. A comfort with public speaking and community organizing is preferred and good computer skills are expected. Applicants must be law school graduates in good academic standing.

Each year, the University of Miami School of Law provides two fellowship programs for students to work for public interest organizations during the summer:

HOPE Fellows (1L and 2L students)

The HOPE Public Interest Resource Center provides stipends to law students who work in otherwise uncompensated public interest jobs in exchange for a year-commitment to actively serving on the Public Interest Leadership Board. HOPE’s success and growth over the past 10 years is due largely in part to the energy, dedication, and leadership of former and current HOPE Fellows.

HOPE Fellows work with domestic and international public interest agencies & non-governmental organizations to provide much-needed legal advocacy to underserved and marginalized populations. All 1Ls and 2Ls are encouraged to apply.

Center for Ethics and Public Service Public Interest Law Summer Fellowship Program (1L students)

The University of Miami School of Law is pleased to announce the 2009 Public Interest Law Summer Fellowship Program. This program is open only to current first-year law students. All 1L students who will begin second-year classes at UM in the Fall of 2009 are eligible to apply.

The Public Interest Law Summer Fellowship Program is specifically designed for students who have a sincere, demonstrated interest in public service work and in providing free legal assistance to the poor. The program is an intensive and serious commitment, involving full-time work at a public interest law office, classroom sessions, and a legal research & writing project.

The program will run for approximately nine weeks. The students selected must be available for the entire program, from orientation through the closing session. The students selected will each receive approximately $3,000-$3,500 as a fellowship stipend, in addition to three (3) academic credits, tuition-free. Approximately 17 public interest student fellows will be selected for the program, contingent on the funding received from the Florida Bar Foundation Interest on Trust accounts grant program and other grant sources.

The topic for the summer program is Public Interest Advocacy for indigent clients. The student fellows will experience firsthand how lawyers can make a significant difference in the lives of indigent clients by representing them in domestic violence, mental health, education, disability, immigration and other proceedings.

Students selected for the program will work 40 hours per week in placements arranged by the Program Directors. All legal work handled by the students will be supervised by attorneys at their respective placements. This summer’s placements are expected (but not guaranteed) to include the University of Miami Children & Youth Law Clinic, University of Miami Community Health Clinic, the Public Defender’s Office, the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center, Legal Services of Greater Miami, Legal Aid Services of Broward County, and the Legal Aid Society of the Dade County Bar Association. Student fellows will need to be distributed evenly among the placements. Students selected must agree to accept any placement that they are assigned
by the Program Directors.

Spring 2009 Resume Referral Program

The Spring 2009 Resume Referral program is now underway. The Resume Referral program is an opportunity for employers unable to interview on campus to request and obtain application materials from interested students. The Resume Referral program will take place throughout the spring semester and employers will be divided into sessions based on bidding deadline. Bidding is now open for those employers in the "Spring 2009 Resume Referral Session (February 27, 2009)." Bidding for these employers will end on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 11:00 p.m. EST.

PLEASE NOTE: There is no benefit to bidding early in the bidding period or detriment to waiting until the latter portion of the bidding period to submit your bids. If you currently have grades outstanding, you may wait until grades are obtained to submit your bids. Employers are not made aware of when you submitted your bids. As long as your bids are received by 11:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2009, your materials will be sent to the employer. However, the CDO does not recommend waiting until the very last minute to submit your bids to avoid any last minute computer or other technical issues.

To participate, you must complete the bidding process on Symplicity, a World Wide Web based program. "Bidding" entails submitting your resume and other requested materials via Symplicity. Instructions on how to bid on the Symplicity system is provided in the Student Guide to Symplicity document available on the CDO Student Portal. You may begin bidding by logging onto Symplicity and selecting "OCI, Resume Referral and Direct Contact Schedules" from the top navigation bar. Please note that Symplicity only allows you to view and bid on employers seeking applications from your class year or LL.M. program. Also keep in mind that new employers may be added during the bidding period. Should this happen, an email will be sent notifying students of the additional employer.

All students have a Symplicity account. If you cannot locate your Symplicity login information, please email the CDO and provide your full name, class year and email address (this email address will be your username for the site). You will then receive your login information via email. Please allow up to two business days for a response.

Information on the OCI and Resume Referral programs is available in the Spring 2009 OCI Handbook. The entire handbook is available on the CDO Student Portal. You must use your UM law email address and password to log onto the system.

Last week, the Career Development Office welcomed Ana Veliz, the chair of the Florida Bar's General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section to campus to discuss small firm practice. During her discussion, she shared the following information which students may find helpful.

The largest entry level law firm market in Florida is the small firm market;

Firms of 10 attorneys or less comprise of 73% of Florida Bar membership;

According to the ABA, 86% of law students expect to practice at a small firm;

According to NALP, 22.4% of graduates obtain their entry level position through targeted mailings;

The GPSSF welcomes student members. The rate to join is $35/year and among the benefits to membership is access to a small firm directory that is on their website. Students may obtain an application form online.

Each March, the GPSSF hosts a conference in Orlando. In conjunction with the conference, the section hosts a job fair for those students interested in interviewing with small firms. This year’s conference is Friday and Saturday, March 20-21 and the job fair will be held on Saturday, March 21. More information about the job fair will be forthcoming from the CDO shortly.

DART is now accepting applications for the 2009 DART Organizers Institute - the paid, four-month field school for people interested in launching a career in community organizing. Participants will undergo a combined classroom and field training covering such topics as:· Entering a community· Identifying and training local leaders· Strategic planning and issue cutting· Relationship and community building· Direct Action on community issues·

Fundraising The DART Center, has built coalitions throughout the country that have won important victories on a broad set of justice issues including:· Education reform in low-performing public schools· Job Training· Drugs and Violence· Criminal Recidivism· Living Wage· Neighborhood Revitalization, etc. The DART Organizers Institute combines a 7-day classroom orientation with 15 weeks of infield training at a DART host organization. This is a paid training program that includes: a $7,000 living stipend, transportation to the classroom orientation and host city, and mileage reimbursement during the infield training. Room, board, and tuition will also be paid by DART during the 7-day classroom training. After successful completion of the program, DART will work to place graduates into permanent full time salaried positions. Graduates from the four month DART Organizers Institute have gone onto Associate Community Organizing and Executive Director positions throughout the country. The 7-day classroom orientation and 15 week infield training starts mid summer 2009 and runs through early Fall 2009. Training locations will include placements in several states around the country. Although it may be helpful, no direct experience is necessary. Organizer Trainees (OTs) hired to participate in the DART Organizers Institute must demonstrate a desire to pursue community organizing as a long-term professional career. A master's degree or similar life experience is preferred though unnecessary. Candidates must have a college degree or be graduating prior to June 1, 2009. Also, candidates must display a workmanlike diligence, be driven to produce sustained results, have proven capacity to build relationships of trust, create and execute a plan, act professionally, feel comfortable working with religious institutions, be accountable and willing to hold others accountable, demonstrate disciplined thought and action, and work in a team setting. OTs must also have access to a car during their training and be flexible regarding relocation. Fluency in Spanish/English is a plus and people of color are encouraged to apply.

Florida Bar Tax Section Fellowships

The Florida Bar Tax Section is stripping away some barriers holding new tax lawyers back from participating in the section-offered conferences and CLE events. Starting this spring, the section’s New Tax Lawyers Committee will offer two-year fellowships to two young tax attorneys annually. Committee Co-chairs Steve Hadjilogiou and Caryn Smith said the section has committed $5,000 per year to fund two fellowships to help recruit young lawyers. The money is meant to offset travel expenses to Tax Section meetings in Amelia Island, Ft. Lauderdale, and Orlando.

Lawyers with less than 10 years of practice, or under the age of 36, are eligible. Fellows will be expected to attend meetings, write articles on tax topics for The Florida Bar Journal or Tax Section Bulletin, and/or speak at Tax Section events, and they will be matched with local, seasoned mentors in their practice areas. Hadjilogiou said he hoped fellows might also consider helping to expand the section’s growing local lunch-and-learn and social events throughout the state.

Positions Location: Miami, FL

Qualifications: Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are first or second year law students with strong research and writing skills. Prior knowledge of immigration law is preferred but not required. Selected applicants will be required to submit to a security background check that takes 6-8 weeks to complete.

Description: This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop research, writing and analytical skills. The students will work directly under the supervision of the Attorney Advisor and the Judicial Law Clerks hired through the Attorney General's Honor Program. The summer internship is a volunteer, unpaid position. The Massachusetts Bar Foundation - Legal Intern Fellowship Program offers approximately 6 stipends to law students who intern during the summer months at nonprofit organizations providing civil legal services to low-income clients in Massachusetts. Students must work 10 weeks.

The Peggy Browning Fund will support between 40 and 50 funded Summer Fellowships in labor-related organizations throughout the United States. Participating labor organizations and application materials are available at: http://www.peggybrowningfund.org/apply.html

Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA) Foundation Stipends

The FCBA Foundation Now Accepting Applications for Funding of Unpaid Legal Internships at Government Agencies:

For the sixteenth consecutive year, the Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA) Foundation will award stipends to law students from its Chairman Robert E. Lee Scholarship and Internship Fund. In 2009, the Foundation will award at least five $5,000 stipends to law students employed as unpaid summer interns in positions with the FCC and other government agencies or entities with a connection to the communications industry (i.e., broadcasting, cable television, telephony, satellite, wireless, and information technology).

In addition, the Foundation will select one outstanding intern among those chosen to receive an additional stipend of $600 for the summer—the “Max Paglin Award.” Mr. Paglin was the former General Counsel and Executive Director of the FCC, and the founder of the Golden Jubilee Commission on Telecommunications, which compiled a definitive legislative history of the Communications Act.

Requirements

Applicants will be selected on the basis of: (1) a demonstrated interest in the communications field, (2) having secured or having pending, an unpaid summer position (internship) for at least 8 weeks in communications with a government agency, (3) dependence on financial assistance in order to accept the unpaid internship in a government agency or entity involved in communications; and, (4) community activities. To the extent a recipient receives unanticipated funding for the unpaid internship, the FCBA Foundation’s general policy is to reduce its scholarship awards by any amount that a recipient’s total funding (including all sources) for the internship would otherwise exceed $7,000.

Applications for a Lee Fund scholarship should be submitted to Kerry Loughney, FCBA Foundation, 1020 19th Street, N.W., Suite 325, Washington, D.C. 20036, by Friday, March 6, 2009. Applicants may be asked to interview with members of the Foundation Board; interviews may be conducted by telephone. Winners will be notified by Friday, April 17, 2009.

Opportunities for Students Interested in Southeast Asia

The following are two opportunities for students interested in Southeast Asia:

1. Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia International Legal Studies Internship Program

Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia ("BABSEA") is preparing to host the 6th Annual BABSEA International Legal Studies Internship Program from May through August 2009. The internship program seeks to connect the skills of aspiring lawyers and law-related persons from around the world with a project that will give them insight into social justice and public interest law internationally and specifically in Southeast Asia. The internship aims to produce a tangible work product that will be utilized in the communities in which BABSEA work, and will directly result in disadvantaged populations gaining greater awareness of and access to their legal systems, as well as helping to provide support to our partner universities and organizations.

Deadline for Applications:
The deadline for early acceptance consideration is January 15, 2009 and the overall deadline for applications is February 15th, 2009. Later applications may be considered depending on circumstances.

2. The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington (VABAW)’s Hong Duc Clerkship

The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington (VABAW)’s Hong Duc Clerkship provides a law student with the opportunity to clerk at an international law firm in Vietnam for summer 2009. The Clerkship Recipient has the unique opportunity to learn about the local cultures and customs firsthand while living in Vietnam and to learn about international and comparative law by working at a major law firm. The Clerkship will award up to a total of $5,000, with approximately $2,000 applied to a round-trip airfare ticket to Vietnam and a maximum of $1,000 for each month of the Clerkship paid directly to the Clerkship Recipient for living expenses. The Clerkship Recipient is matched with one of the following participating law firms: Baker & McKenzie; Duane Morris LLP; Fraser Law Company; Lovells; Mayer Brown JSM; Tilleke & Gibbins; and VILAF-Hong Duc.

The participating law firm will provide the Clerkship recipient with meaningful legal work, including but not limited to conducting legal research, preparing legal documents, and other related legal. The Clerkship program was not created to provide long-term, post-law-school graduation employment for the Clerkship Recipient. However, the participating law firm has discretion to review such option and extend such employment to the Clerkship Recipient directly. Because VABAW fully funds the Clerkship, the law firm is prohibited from paying the Clerkship Recipient any additional stipend for summer 2009 (excluding complimentary social meals, law firm summer retreat activities, etc.). The Clerkship Recipient is also not allowed to split his/her summer.

Applicants will be evaluated by VABAW based upon the following criteria: (1) overall academic background; (2) community service involvement; (3) professional interests; (4) communication skills; (5) personal statement; (6) references; (7) writing abilities; (8) resume; (9) connection to Washington state; (10) connection to or interest in the Vietnamese American community; and (11) interview (for out of state applicants, VABAW will arrange for a telephonic or video interview).

Charlotte Legal Diversity Clerkship Program

The Charlotte Legal Diversity Clerkship Program: A Unique Program Allowing First-Year Law Students to Experience Law Practice within a Law Firm and a Corporate Legal Department

The Mecklenburg County Bar is pleased to offer the 2009 Charlotte Legal Diversity Clerkship Program. This internship opportunity is a highly competitive program that places first-year law students who advance the value of diversity with corporate law departments and law firms in Charlotte, North Carolina. The twelve-week summer clerkship will allow the selected first-year law students to spend the first six weeks working as a summer associate in the Charlotte office of one participating law firm and the second six weeks working in the Charlotte law department of one of the corporate partners.

Students who are selected will fully participate in the summer programs of the participating law departments and law firms and will be compensated by those entities at the same level as other first-year summer associates. The law students will participate in professional, civic and social activities that highlight the benefits of practicing law and living in the progressive and dynamic city of Charlotte, North Carolina. The 12-week program is designed to expose law students to legal issues in a corporate retail setting and to enhance practical understanding of the law. Projects will include providing research and analysis, writing and drafting reports and other documents, and attending meetings with in-house attorneys and internal business clients in the assigned practice areas.

Students must log on using their UM law email and password to access the site. Once logged in, access materials by selecting the “Shared Documents” link and then choosing the appropriate folder.

To be notified whenever a new document is added, select “Site Settings” from the top navigation bar and then “My alerts on this site” under “Manage My Information.” Choose “Add Alert,” select “Shared Documents” and press “Next.” Then select the type of notification you would like to receive and the frequency of the notification and press “Ok.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the General Counsel (OGC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is seeking motivated and enthusiastic applicants for its 2009 Summer Honors Legal Intern Program. Legal internship opportunities are available in the Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD offices.

Overview: The OGC-CMS Division counsels both the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on a wide variety of challenging legal issues that affect the Medicare and Medicaid programs, among others.

The OGC-CMS Division recruits law students to work as interns each summer. Interns will have the opportunity to assist Division attorneys in all aspects of their work, including research, writing and client meetings. In addition, the nationwide OGC summer intern program coordinator hosts events that given the interns in all OGC divisions an opportunity to meet, socialize and learn about the Department and current legal topics.

Internships are generally unpaid. However, if funding permits, the Division may be able to fund one position. Unpaid interns may receive course credit if such credit is available from the law school.

Selection Criteria: The OGC-CMS Division reviews many elements of a candidate's background before offering an internship opportunity. These elements include: academic achievement, membership on a legal journal, moot court experience, clinical legal experience, demonstrated commitment to public service and specialized coursework in administrative, health or federal procedure law.

Eligibility: All currently enrolled first year, second year and third year law students that do not expect to graduate in May 2009 are eligible to apply for the 2009 Summer Honors Legal Intern Program. Graduating law students are eligible to apply only if they will be starting a judicial clerkship or full-time graduate program in the Fall of 2009.

Deadlines: The deadline for receipt of application materials is January 16, 2009. Applicants who are selected for an interview will be notified by February 6, 2009.

Length of internship: Interns typically work for 10-12 weeks. However, split summer requests will be considered. Candidates will be asked at their interview whether they prefer to work in the Washington, DC or Baltimore, MD office.

Citizenship requirements: All U.S. citizens that meet the criteria listed above are encouraged to apply. While non-US citizens may also apply, such appointments are extremely rare and are granted only when they serve a purpose necessary to accomplishing the Department's mission.
